America's turned her back on God--now God's turning His back on us (Part Two)

The Bible says, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD." (Ps 33:12) For centuries since her founding, America has been immensely blessed, and Americans honored, worshiped, and served the God of the Bible. The Bible says in Deut. 28 that if we honor and obey God, we reap blessings. Dishonor and disobey Him, we reap curses. And President Ronald Reagan once said, "If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under." Alas, it appears we are going under.

Gradually, for at least the last six decades, America has been turning her back on God. Sadly, as the Bible teaches, God has been turning His back on us. While we discussed this in the last column, there is much more we need to hear. God will not be mocked. And this is exactly what we do when we thumb our proverbial noses at Him, then go our own way and do our own thing.

Our Founding Fathers believed in and feared God. Patrick Henry said, "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ." John Quincy Adams said, "From the day of the Declaration...they (the American people) were bound by the laws of God, which they all, and by the laws of The Gospel, which they nearly all, acknowledge as the rules of their conduct." But today, increasing numbers of Americans are taking credit for the multitudes of blessings we enjoy individually and as a nation. We have become far too wise in our own eyes to acknowledge the help of God. Further, since the Bible, prayer, and the Ten Commandments have been removed from government (public) schools, at least two generations of children are being taught worldly ways instead of godly ways. The entertainment industry portrays almost anything pertaining to God, Jesus, or the Bible as either totally outdated, irrelevant, or as a social disorder. But how can this be happening if, according to Gallop and several other pollsters, nearly 80 percent of Americans are Christians?

The Bible teaches that Christians will do two things: Love God, and obey His commandments. In fact, Jesus said that of all the commandments, the most important is to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength." (Mark 12:30 NLT) Could it be that many who call themselves Christians don't actually love God, let alone do so to the extent Jesus calls for? Because, according to Scripture, we show our love for God by obeying His commandments. But His commandments have been pushed from schools, government institutions, and most public places. And our nation's laws, based on God's laws and commandments, are being badly distorted or totally rejected.

President Harry S. Truman said, "The fundamental basis of this Nation's law was given to Moses on the Mount. The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings we get from Exodus and St. Matthew, from Isaiah and St. Paul." But if we no longer believe any of this is valid, we have no moral foundation on which to exist. Also, our existence as a nation relies on man's ability and intellect instead of Divine wisdom. Which do we really want to place our trust and faith in: Our own finite and fallible capabilities or God's infinite and infallible capabilities? I will choose God any day of the week.

President John Quincy Adams explained, "There are three points of doctrine the belief of which forms the foundation of all morality. The first is the existence of God; the second is the immortality of the human soul; and the third is a future state of rewards and punishments." Because of the "dumbing-down" of our children in government schools, and the actions of God-hating groups such as the ACLU, the existence of God has become a threat to our moral/religious foundation. Ignorance leads to an inability to think, or discern right from wrong, good from evil. If there is no God, then we can create our own gods, and do whatever we wish. Without God and His laws, there are no absolutes, and man can "make it up as he goes along." (You might want to read my series, "The Destruction of America," in the Renew America archives. It details how our demise has been carefully orchestrated over nearly a century.)

Just as the existence of God is being questioned, so is the immortality of the human soul. Christianity teaches that we don't just live here on earth for awhile and then are forever dead, but that our souls – the essence of our very being – will live forever in either heaven or hell. Of course, the destination for eternity is determined by how we live our lives here on earth. THIS is the real reason for the dumbing-down of society, political correctness, and all the other garbage being rammed down our proverbial throats. The Bible teaches of consequences and rewards – a system of judgment.

Our Founding Fathers firmly believed in God's system of judgment. Therefore, they lived their lives in fear (healthy respect) of the Lord. It caused them to carefully weigh every decision made by them in establishing and governing this nation. They wanted to please God, not bring upon themselves His wrath in judgment. Today, too few Americans fear God and His judgment. Again, children in schools no longer hear about God. Oh yes, they hear about other gods, or idols, but not the One True God of the Bible. We have truly gone astray, and our nation is reaping the consequences of our rejection of God.

In our rejection of God, we have broken all of His commandments. President John Quincy Adams said, "The law given from Sinai was a civil and municipal, as well as a moral and religious code; it contained many statutes...of universal application – laws essential to the existence of men in society, and most of which have been enacted by every nation which ever professed any code of laws." The most recognizable of God's commandments to us were given to Moses to share with Israel, and are found in Exodus chapter 20:

The Ten Commandments

1.) I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me.

2.) You shall not make idols of any kind.

3.) You shall not misuse the name of the Lord.

4.) Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy.

5.) Honor your father and mother.

6.) You shall not kill.

7.) You shall not commit adultery.

8.) You shall not steal.

9.) You shall not lie.

10.) You shall not covet anything that is your neighbor's.

After sharing these commandments, Moses finally told the Israelites to let their fear of God to keep them from sinning. How awesome if our society was constantly reminded of even just these simple but powerful words. What a difference they would make.

Dear friends, God gave us His commandments, His Bible, to keep us from sinning...to keep us from our own destruction. And make no mistake, without His guidance, we will destroy ourselves. We are destroying ourselves. And yet, we seem totally oblivious to the fact there are consequences to our actions. Of course, if there is NO God, then there's nothing to worry about. So then, remove all mention of God from society, and scare true Christians from standing firm in their faith and convictions, and people are free to sin in every conceivable and unconceivable way. And yes, a growing segment of society has become addicted to sin. Sin will prevail if Christians don't stand firm, and speak God's Word to this rebellious generation. For people to turn from their wicked ways, they must hear God's Truth, and Christian believers who know the Truth are those who are to share this truth. If we refuse to do our job, then we, too, face the consequences of our inaction – our disobedience to God's Word.

When God turns His back on us, He abandons us to the will and whims of mere man. Since the Bible says "The human heart is most deceitful and desperately wicked," (Jer. 17:9 NLT), trusting our fellow man with our lives and future seems careless...maybe even a little crazy! And yet, multitudes of Americans, including growing numbers of Christians trust men and women in government to care for them and teach their children. Many of these "public servants" are mere tyrants and have broken God's commandments. In fact, the Bible teaches that if we break just one of God's commandments, we have broken them all. (James 2:10-11)

Turning our back on God causes Him to do the same. Proof that God will indeed do this is repeated throughout the Bible. Israel was the "apple of God's eye," and yet, He turned His back on them more than once. This is NOT a game. Judgment is going to fall on America. It must happen to set in motion events leading to the rise of the antichrist. I pray we turn back to God, and start shouting God's Word from the rooftops to anyone who will hear. The Bible speaks of a remnant of believers, Christians, before Jesus returns. I pray I am part of the remnant, don't you? Then let's do our part to help turn America back to God. To anyone willing to hear....
