Sobering news, undetected news

August 18, 2012

I have been at the Texas Gulf Coast for a few days with the family, relaxing on the beach and stuffing myself with shrimp. While I have been a mountain lover over the years, my wife prefers the beach. In nearly 50 years of married life, I have learned to love the beach.

Wednesday morning, as we were packing to leave and head back to reality and the frenetic life in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex, I turned on a news channel and was greeted with the story that today, August 15, 2012, was the kick-off of the new Obama immigration policy, which he had announced two months ago.

His new amnesty policy for illegal immigrants in this country addresses those who were brought here as children. That is how the policy is explained.

What he has done is to suspend law passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by a president. And in so doing Obama has, once again, shown his disdain for United States sovereignty. Of course, most of the pols in Washington and many Americans disregard our sovereignty.

Obama's new policy is called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Under the policy, those here illegally, who qualify, will avoid deportation and be able to receive work permits. What a way to start a long day which would take us back home in about ten hours of hard highway driving.

As we drove through Port Aransas on the way to the ferry to take us across the Corpus Christi Channel and on to Aransas Pass and northward to Dallas, we were stunned to see a huge white boat with the marking- U.S. Customs and Border Protection on the side next to a large seal of the United Stated Homeland Security Agency. Four 350 horsepower outboard engines hung from the transom. It was one of the many boats the agency uses to patrol the U.S. border.

This boat, however, was not in use; it was on a trailer, on dry land. Then, I remembered the earlier news story about Obama's new amnesty program and thought that perhaps he had, in addition, stopped protecting our borders.

Backdoor approaches by the Obama administration, such as this executive order granting amnesty to hundreds of thousands or millions of illegal immigrants, are not new. He has issued hundreds of executive orders changing or thwarting current laws in the three and one-half years of his administration.

Later in the day we stopped for lunch at a small restaurant which happened to have wi-fi, and my wife took her small notebook computer in.

I forgot about the immigration issue when, scanning news on the Inet, I ran across the following story: Silent Running, Russian attack submarine sailed in Gulf of Mexico undetected for weeks, U.S. officials say

The story by Bill Gertz was published in the Washington Free Beacon on August 14. According to the story, a Russian nuclear-powered Akula class attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles plied, undetected, throughout the gulf of Mexico for up to one month. An unnamed U.S. official is quoted in the story, "The Akula was built for one reason and one reason only: To kill U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines and their crews."

The U.S. Navy operates a submarine base at Kings Bay, Georgia, on the Atlantic coast. According to CNIC//Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay website, the base currently houses six ballistic missile subs and two guided missile subs.

The Free Beacon story further reported that the last time a Russian submarine was detected close to United States shores was in 2009 when two Akula class subs were spotted off the east coast. The Obama administration, according to the article, plans to cut defense spending by $487 billion over the next ten years with specific cuts of $1.3 billion which would scrap 16 new warships. Ten advanced P-8 anti-submarine warfare jets would also be cut.

Twice that we know of, under the Obama administration's protection of our country, Russian nuclear submarines have cruised close to United States shores.

The sobering news of how fragile the defense of America is under the current administration took my mind off the earlier news of Obama's amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Almost as sobering was the treatment of these news stories. The story of the suspension of immigration laws was reported by most of the major news networks. The story of the peril by Russian nuclear submarines with armed missiles cruising well within striking distance of my home was reported by one small Washington news outlet.
