'Heroic Media': helping to build a culture of life
By Matt C. Abbott
The following is a brief e-mail interview I recently conducted with Kimberly Guidry Speirs, director of communication for Heroic Media.
Matt C. Abbott: Would you give my readers an overview of Heroic Media — its mission and background?
Kimberly Speirs: "Heroic Media is a faith-based non-profit that places television, Internet and billboard advertisements to help women facing unexpected pregnancies with hopeful alternatives. We believe that once a woman learns of all the positive options available to her, she'll choose life. In Austin, where we've run consistent campaigns since 2004, the abortion ratio has dropped 24 percent."
Matt C. Abbott: Heroic Media has some big-name supporters. Would you name them and say why they support the organization?
Kimberly Speirs: "Heroic Media has had the opportunity to work with leaders in the life movement for many years.
"Most recently, Sarah Palin spoke on our behalf. She supports our mission because she has lived through two unexpected pregnancies (her son Trig and her grandson Tripp). She appreciates that Heroic Media empowers women and tells them they are strong enough and smart enough to raise a child.
"Mike Huckabee has also spoken on our behalf. The 'life' issue is his priority as he's stated many times publicly. He appreciates the work Heroic Media does because he recognizes the power of mass media. He asks our audiences if they remember going into a restaurant and being asked if they'd prefer smoking or non-smoking? Then he explains that doesn't happen any longer because of a well-researched mass media campaign. Then he drives the point home stating that Heroic Media wants to do with abortion what was done with smoking. He says: 'Heroic Media is the single most effective way to reduce abortions because they are changing the culture.'
"Democratic Sen. Zell Miller is on our national advisory board. He has said: 'We all know the power of television and how it can move numbers. Heroic Media, with its highly professional approach, sways people to a position of life.'
"Bill O'Reilly, who spoke for us in Houston a few years ago, said that 'to make inroads with abortion, you have to take a different approach ... Heroic Media's plan is the right plan.'
"Col. Oliver North was our first speaker, and he was amazing! He said: 'The message is so powerful, the medium so pervasive that it may be the only chance some young woman — or even some young man — may have to get it right.'
"And, finally, Laura Ingraham spoke before about 1,400 guests in Austin in 2008. She explained: 'Mass media [are] extremely expensive, but it's extremely effective if done well ... Heroic Media reminds us day in and day out that you can move public opinion with truth and information.'"
Matt C. Abbott: It's my understanding that Heroic Media is in the process of "fine-tuning" its mission. What does Heroic Media hope to accomplish in the next several months?
Kimberly Speirs: "Heroic Media has had tremendous success in central Texas through God's grace. We believe we should provide hopeful, positive alternatives to women across the nation! That's why we're running commercials coast to coast and have opened offices in Chicago and Florida. Our commercials have two goals: 1) to answer a call for help coming from women facing unexpected pregnancies — we connect these women with life-affirming pregnancy resource centers near them — and 2) to educate and encourage people to really think about the abortion issue."
Speaking of pregnancy resource centers, they are presently under attack by the pro-aborts, particularly in New York. Click here to find out more.
