ART MOORE — A criminal justice professor has been charged in federal court with setting a series of forest fires in Northern California with the intent of endanger firefighters. Gary Stephen Maynard, 47, was arrested Saturday and charged with setting multiple fires in Lassen National Forest and Shasta Trinity National Forest late last month. "Where Maynard went, fires started. Not just once, but over and over again," the government said in a court memorandum arguing for Maynard to be denied bail.... (more)

WASHINGTON EXAMINER — Amanda Hoerschelman used to teach 75 children a day. As a 5th-grade public school teacher in Texas and Georgia, she had a revolving door of 10- and 11-year-olds. She loved teaching and her students but knew they weren't getting the one-on-one attention they needed. Still, when Hoerschelman had her eldest daughter Ava, she didn't think twice about sending her to a brick and mortar. That all changed when the family moved to Maquoketa, Iowa, with their 5-day-old daughter Autumn in tow.... (more)

SELWYN DUKE — To use a twist on an Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen line, millions of people hate what they think Christianity is. Far fewer people hate what Christianity actually is. Bringing this to mind, again, is a comment I recently came across from an avowedly "non-religious" mother who was upset that her seven-year-old's Mormon best friend wouldn't stop talking to him about Bible stories and Jesus. "I don't want him to be religious, honestly," the woman wrote to an advice columnist in April. "I want him to learn that you should be a good person and do the right thing because it's the right thing to do, not because God will punish you if you don't."... (more)

WORLDNETDAILY — An executive order signed quietly by Tennessee's Republican governor is troubling some Americans as it greenlights the National Guard and State Guard to implement quarantines and involuntary commitment of citizens "in connection with certain health care and emergency services operations," with the governor specifically concerned about "an increase in COVID-19 cases."... WORLDNETDAILY — Mentally travel back in time to a few days before the Nov. 3, 2020 election. President Donald Trump was drawing massive overflow crowds to his daily rallies in cities across the nation, even holding five events in five different cities on the Sunday before Election Day. WASHINGTON TIMES — Sen. Rand Paul says Americans must "send a message" to Dr. Anthony Fauci and the "Lockdown Mafia" in the wake of COVID-19 delta variant commentary: "We're done listening to you!" The Kentucky Republican emailed supporters Wednesday with an impassioned plea to reject further advice from the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "Anthony Fauci has inflicted an enormous amount of pain and suffering on the American people already," Mr. Paul wrote. "And when he promises even more, you know he really means it. You see, King Fauci knows that his power depends on keeping the public afraid. That's why he's now going around whipping up fear and vowing to bring about more suffering and restrictions."... (more)

BOB UNRUH — It was Ronald Reagan who once said, the "nine most terrifying words in the English language are 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'" These days that might be reworded - - "I'm from the government. I'm here with your vaccination." Vaccines never are guaranteed - - that's why the U.S. government makes their manufacturers immune to lawsuits over the damages and death they can deliver - - and they especially are suspect when they are developed and delivered while the pandemic they confront actually is continuing.... WESTERN JOURNAL — Floyd, New Mexico, is about 200 miles east of Albuquerque, perhaps a half-hour from the Texas border. Little more than a wide spot in the road, Floyd has a few homes and buildings, a post office that's essentially a mobile home, Floyd Baptist Church sitting beneath a tall white steeple and the buildings of the Floyd Municipal School District. Last week, Floyd's school board decided to try something new.... (more)

BRUCE DEITRICK PRICE — In the computer's early days, when complex code was still spawning unpredictable results, almost every new piece of software had bugs. Clever product managers started claiming that failure (a bug) was actually a desirable feature, if only dim-witted customers would learn how to use it properly. When the marketing people could confuse customers enough to suspend judgment, that could be a valuable victory. Instead of rejecting the product, these customers suffered through a long learning curve.... (more)

SELWYN DUKE — It's amazing how many people are trying to tear down present glories in the name of a past none of them have any interest in going back to.
