Virtue, morality, religion – characteristics acclaimed by three of our founding fathers as necessary for the success of the nation they helped found. Could it be that the turmoil we currently see in our nation is a result of our turning away from those three elements of character? Could it be that our prayers for peace, tranquility, civility and consolation are not being heard by the God our founders believed had a guiding hand in the founding of this nation because we have turned away from virtue, morality and religion?
God deals with people as individuals and He deals with them corporately as nations. The Bible is filled with examples of His wrath against nations. Could it be He has loosed His wrath on America for its sins?
Although there is no biblical prohibition against slavery, why should God bless a nation which, in spite of the reluctance of many influential people at the time, adopted the institution of slavery into its founding? Perhaps it was not just the institution of slavery, but the conditions of slavery as it existed for several hundred years. Slave owners used the Bible’s lack of prohibition of slavery to justify it, while spurning the Bible’s admonition, “ Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.” (Col. 4:1 NIV)
Is slavery America’s greatest sin?
Since 1973, the United States has become history’s most prolific practitioner of genocide. When the United States Supreme Court ruled in Roe v Wade that women have the legal right to abort their children, it opened the floodgates to mass extermination of the human race in the United States. This desire to kill babies was fueled by the emerging women’s liberation movement and the radical environmental movement which has two main goals in its agenda: the elimination of the internal combustion engine and the reduction of population by legalized abortion.
Forty-eight years and more than 63 million murdered babies later, the question must be asked: why would God continue to bless a nation that has violated his commandment to not murder?
Is abortion America’s greatest sin?
More recently, we, as a nation, have embraced other causes which violate God’s plan for man. For thousands of years, marriage was defined as God originally created it- a relationship between a man and a woman. Only in our sophistication of postmodern thought have we come to accept marriage as something else: relationship between people of the same sex, which the Bible condemns. This begs the question: Why would God continue to bless a nation which has turned from His moral precepts?
The Bible records many examples of God’s wrath. Sometimes He used natural disasters, sometimes diseases, sometimes other nations, and sometimes people. When God destroyed the cities of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim , He used sulfur and fire. But, He always uses an instrument or an agent to deliver His wrath.
Religion in the United States is in decline and Christianity, in particular, has become a target of political liberals. Pew Research Center conducted polls in 2018 and 2019 and asked Americans about their religion. Sixty-five percent of Americans self identified as Christians- down twelve percent over the past decade. Those who self identified as atheists, agnostics, or “nothing in particular” was twenty-six percent-up from seventeen percent in 2009.
In 2008, Candidate Obama stereotyped Midwest voters in a pejorative statement, “They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion...” Surprisingly, his opponent, Hillary Clinton, criticized him for that remark. Then, in 2015, Clinton said the following, “Deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed” for the sake of giving women access to “reproductive health care and safe childbirth.” (Sellin, Lawrence, “ Hillary, Soros and the political genocide of Christianity.” The Hill, October 14, 2016)
The United States Constitution states in Article VI, “... no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” Yet, Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat, trampled this constitutional provision during Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearing on her nomination to the United Stated Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit when she said, “And I think in your case, professor, when you read your speeches, the conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you, and that’s of concern .” Feinstein was referring to Barrett’s Catholic faith and she voted against Barrett’s confirmation. One group in the United States that has adopted all of the above mentioned sins is the Democrat Party. Its party platform has endorsed abortion since 1976. Democrat politicians have since continued to advance abortion including support of the use of public funds for abortions. In 2012, Democrats endorsed same sex marriage in their party platform. And the Democrat Party role in its fight to maintain the institution of Negro slavery in the United States for the benefit of its southern constituents is a matter of history.
In 2012, Democrats removed mention of God from their party platform. When criticized by Republicans, they hastily called a vote to add “God” to the platform which left the convention in chaos. By a questionable voice vote, the chair declared the measure to include this reference: “...everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential." When the convention chair announced, on the third voice vote, the passage of the language, he was met with loud boos from the crowd.
Perhaps Jefferson’s question has been answered and his prophecy revealed. The New Testament scripture, Romans 1:28, says, “Because those people refuse to keep in mind the true knowledge about God, he has given them over to corrupted minds, so that they do the things that they should not do.” (Amplified Bible) Could it be that God’s justice has awakened and He is using an instrument to pour out His wrath on our nation because that instrument, itself, has led the nation away from virtue, morality and religion?
