The Christian Action League (CAL) announced this week that its Executive Director, Rev. Mark Creech, will be taking a sabbatical for the entire month of August to focus on health and recovery. This week marks his last in the office until his planned return in September.

In a heartfelt statement, Rev. Creech shared the reasoning behind this necessary break:

    Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I want to share an important update with you regarding some upcoming plans. As many of you know, I have been deeply committed to the Christian Action League, diligently working to support its mission and operations. Throughout this journey of twenty-five years of service, finding time for rest during any year has been a challenge. Several good friends, including some of you, have suggested that I needed a sabbatical or an extended period off the job. While I deeply appreciated these sentiments, I have often felt that taking such a break was impractical given the dynamic and ongoing needs of our ministry. I have resisted with every fiber of my being, but I can’t resist anymore. I think the fatigue, both emotionally and physically, has become apparent.

Just within the past four years, I have faced significant health challenges that have made me reconsider my stance. I endured a severe bout with COVID-19, which resulted in a high fever (105 degrees) and left me with lasting neurological issues. Additionally, during this same period, I experienced two mini-strokes. These health issues, combined with the ongoing demands of my role, have taken their toll. My one consolation is that I have truly given my everything for Christ through this ministry.

However, recognizing the importance of my health and well-being, the Board has insisted that I take the full month of August away from work in the hope of garnering a refreshed body and spirit. This time away is essential for my well-being and for ensuring that I can continue to serve effectively.

We have made preparations to ensure a continuation of the League's operations during my absence. Board members will step in where needed and help manage activities, and we will continue to maintain our website and weekly e-newsletter. Your continued support and prayers during this time will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your understanding and for standing by me as I take these necessary steps towards finding a renewed strength.

    Sincerely,

    Rev. Mark Creech
    Executive Director
Christian Action League of North Carolina, Inc.

Victor Blackwell, President of the Christian Action League, expressed the urgent need for this action:

We fully support Mark’s need to take this time away. He has endured long hours of toil, which were not simply his choice but necessary to keep the League on the cusp of what’s happening in North Carolina. He has served as the League’s primary administrator, fundraiser, lobbyist, research analyst, and writer of numerous editorials to keep our supporters educated and engaged. He has prepared numerous white papers, news stories, articles, and handouts for lawmakers and other purposes, and he has been the face of the Christian Action League, traveling thousands of miles across the state. He has been primarily responsible for our positive presence in the media and on social media. Our witness is admired and respected in the North Carolina General Assembly and by some in Washington. He has never resented the overwhelming amount of work but considered it a privilege to serve. It is necessary for him to just stop and rest! We are counting on our supporters to understand and to continue giving and praying for the Christian Action League. We look forward to Mark’s return in September.

During this period, CAL will continue its operations, ensuring its mission and activities remain uninterrupted as much as possible. The Christian Action League appreciates the ongoing support and understanding of its community and partners.
