Standing watch over Ole Glory
By Stella Lohmann
How much more do we have to hear about this monstrosity of a healthcare bill to get the message? In reality immediate action is basically exchanging symptoms of one system for another set of problems. Not everything is broken in the insurance and healthcare industry. What's the saying? — don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
Alternatives to fix or replace the current program are knee-jerk responses. Enough concern has been heard all the way to Washington through numerous polls that normally favor of the President and the Democrats. Doesn't conventional wisdom dictate — when in doubt — don't or at least wait?
During the mid July nationally televised Presidential Health Care Press Conference, The Health Care Plan was exposed as no plan at all but rather rhetoric; not even the Congress knew what was in the more than 1000 page concoction — just another freight train rolling through Congress with no tickets to ride for the Republicans or Blue Dog Democrats while taxpayers question its cost and destination.
Prediction time: Watch for marked increases at government meetings from vocal citizens armed with cells phones and video cameras. Then watch UTUBE feature side stepping elected officials actually being accountable for what they've done and will do in the weeks and months to come in Washington. The fallout might trickle down to state races with candidates having to answer in advance what they will or will not do if elected.
Funny, the current situation has so many newcomers following the political scene that new leadership could emerge from the grassroots level. These are the folks writing emails and letters, making phones to talk shows and government offices, and actually reading and listening to dialogue about bills and talking points. Could candidates emerge that just truly care about this country and keeping the original framework of checks and balances in place?
WE THE PEOPLE standing watch over Ole Glory! It could happen.
