National Guard on the southern border: According to today's New York Times, Gov. Perry has the authority to grant arrest powers to his National Guard troops on the southern border. And he should do it. The purpose of a "well-regulated militia," according to the Second Amendment, is to protect "the security of a free State," as in the state of Texas. If it takes arrest powers and the force of arms for the governor to protect the sovereignty of his state, Gov. Perry not only has the authority but indeed the responsibility to direct the Guard to apprehend and detain as necessary.

He doesn't need permission from the federal government for this. His permission and authority come directly from the Constitution, the supreme law of the land.

If Gov. Perry deals firmly with this immigration crisis by using the powers granted to him by the Constitution, he just might wind up being not just the commander-in-chief of the state of Texas, but commander-in-chief of the United States of America.

Bring back the firing squad: The press has been awash in breathless reports about the 117-minute, gasping, heaving execution of a convicted murderer in Arizona. Certainly we don't want anyone to die a horrible, painful death, and it must be noted that there are indications from other eyewitnesses that the murderer's death may not have been as agonizing as the Associated Press wants us to think.

Regardless, this killer did not suffer as much as his victims and the family of his victims. According to the trial record, he was an abusive boyfriend, and ambushed both his young lover and his lover's father at the father's place of business, shot them both dead at point blank range and left them lying in a pool of their own blood. The family is still dealing with the grief and loss 25 years later. Regardless of how painful his death was, justice was done.

This serves as a reminder that the most humane form of capital punishment is death by firing squad. Death is instantaneous, and in fact happens so rapidly that the accused's body does not even have time to register the pain. It is quick, sure and painless. It's time to bring it back.

Howard Stern is right: Howard Stern said this week that to be anti-Israel is to be anti-America. He's right. The United States has always been the firmest friend the state of Israel has had, beginning with the presidency of Harry Truman when the modern nation of Israel came into being in 1948.

Israel is our only true ally in the Middle East, the only representative democracy in that part of the world, and the only nation that shares the moral and spiritual worldview that formed and shaped the United States.

The Scriptures tell us that, as Christians and as a Christian nation, we owe the Jewish people material support in exchange for the spiritual blessings they have bestowed on us by preserving the oracles of God during the centuries leading up to Christ.

We should be the firmest friend Israel has in the world. Sadly, we have a president whose sympathies lie much more with Muslim nations than with the state of Israel. Shame on him.
