Poseidon faith in an upside-down world
By Kurt Kondrich
I recently watched the classic movie Poseidon Adventure (1972 version) about a beautiful luxury ocean liner that is turned upside-down by a fast-moving wave with little or no warning — a visual of how quickly the storms of life can overrun us. I immediately began thinking of what an upside-down world it is we live in today as Christians.
After the terrible flipping of the Poseidon, the passengers are told by the crew to stay put and wait to be rescued. These high-ranking officials in charge assure the passengers that everything will be OK, and everyone needs to stay put even though they are now on the bottom of the ship. A small remnant of individuals realizes the imminent danger and decides to climb upward, even though the journey will be difficult and full of obstacles.
Shortly after this rag-tag group starts their ascent, the seemingly secure ship breaks open and fills rapidly with water. The majority that stayed behind quickly realize their mistake and meet their doom, while this small cadre of survivors climbs to the top of the Poseidon, which is now actually the bottom.
After a perilous journey filled with sacrifice, death, and many hardships, the surviving climbers reach the top of the ship and are rescued as they enter the Light of the outside world.
As I watch the world move very quickly to remove God (Light) from schools, public buildings, media, and every aspect of our culture, I see the fallout of a world turned upside-down. Core elements of our society are under attack daily, and the slippery slope is rapidly turning into solid ice. Marriage is no longer viewed as a sacred, life-long covenant between a man and a woman, and 50 million+ members of our nation have been prenatally eliminated. A silent eugenic movement is underway against children diagnosed prenatally with Down syndrome, and the result has been a 90%+ termination rate.
The birth of my beautiful daughter Chloe, who has Down syndrome, lifted me up, but now a culture that is upside-down is working to eliminate these precious individuals. Can a nation that has eliminated 50 million+ of its most precious treasures survive? In today's culture, it is much easier to sit and do nothing while trying to believe that all is fine.
Jesus said, "Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it." (Matthew 7:13-14).
As in the Poseidon Adventure, the greatest tragedy of our time is the overwhelming number of people who choose not to climb upward and will soon enter the "Wide Gate" of destruction. In this upside-down world, which path are you going to choose? The soul of our nation and where you will spend eternity is at stake, so please consider journeying through life on the narrow road!
