Don't let Republicans lie to you about the debt ceiling

Don't let the Republicans lie to you: if the debt ceiling is not raised, THE U.S. WILL NOT DEFAULT. It takes around $200 billion a year to service our debt, and total revenue to the federal government is somewhere around $2.2 trillion.

We can service the debt, and still have $2 trillion left over to run the country. If the Republicans in the House cannot run this country on $2 trillion, they need to look for new careers, and we need to help them find those new careers as soon as humanly possible.

They will complain that we just have no idea how difficult it will be. I have no sympathy for them. We are paying them $175,000 a year to make tough decisions, and it's time they started earning their money.

The debt ceiling issue will have to be faced again in the very near future, either in the lame duck session or soon after the turn of the year. The Republicans are already telling everybody that we must raise the debt ceiling because we cannot let the U.S go into default. DO NOT LET THEM LIE TO YOU.

That's just their cover story to justify kicking the can down the alley. WE MUST NOT RAISE THE DEBT CEILING, PERIOD. And it's time to communicate that message to Republicans in the House.

What about the Democrats, you may ask? There is virtually no reason to think that they will ever take balancing our budget seriously. If the Republicans don't take on this task, and stick to it with resolve and determination, it will never get done. They cannot wait for the Democrats, nor can they blame the Democrats. The reality is that the debt ceiling cannot be raised without Republican complicity. The onus is and should be on them.

This travesty of a sequester, which will gut the military, was agreed to by the Republicans in the House. Over 42% of the impact of the sequester will come out of defense, and just 14.8% out of entitlements. This was truly a devil's bargain, and while the Republicans will try to lay this off on President Obama, we must not let them. This sequester happened on their watch. They were under no obligation to agree to it or to pass it through the House. It is theirs to own.

We are rapidly running out of time to get our financial house in order before we fall so deeply into the abyss of economic irresponsibility that we may never be able to climb out.

The debt crisis is like the weather: everybody talks about it but nobody does anything about it. Those days are over. If we don't do something about the debt, the debt will do something to us: end America as we know it.

It is time to say a flat and unequivocal "No" to any increase in the debt ceiling. The time to start living within our means is now.
