Fred Hutchison, longtime feature writer at RenewAmerica, passed away Tuesday at his home in Dublin, Ohio. He was 60.
Over 200 of Fred's essays — many of them discussions of Western Civilization's "culture war," written from his rigorous perspective of history, religion, and science — have been published at RenewAmerica since Fred began writing for RA in 2003.
His last article, "Corruption of the science establishment: causes and cures," appeared Dec. 24, 2009.
Fred was an exceptionally prolific, lucid, insightful writer, despite recurring health challenges. He was buoyed by his deep faith in God.
An Aug. 11 obituary in the Columbus Dispatch expressed Fred's life in these words: "Fred's life work has been following God. He was a researcher, scholar, public speaker, and writer and has done some powerful personal counseling. He has brought many to the Lord and helped others in times of crisis and confusion. He has taught sermons, led Bible studies, written numerous [published articles], and has been available to those in need."
Stephen Stone, President of RenewAmerica, issued the following statement in tribute to Fred at Legacy.com:
"We at RenewAmerica.com are deeply saddened by the passing of Fred Hutchison, our esteemed feature writer and colleague. His extraordinary essays — which were unsurpassed in their grasp of philosophy, religion, science, culture, history, and government (and which are archived at www.renewamerica.com/columns/hutchison) — challenged layman and professional alike to rise above shoddy thinking and develop a better appreciation of truth. He was a godly man who left a legacy for future generations to learn from. He will be greatly missed."
Stone added, "I really enjoyed working with Fred over the years. He was a brilliant observer of American culture, an exceptional writer, and an insightful thinker — head and shoulders above just about anybody published out there on the Net."
Said Stone, "He was unafraid to take on any issue or trend he considered fallacious, and at the same time, he had well-considered solutions for the world's most difficult problems. He was sustained in everything he thought and wrote by his faith in God. I will miss his unique contribution to our nation's moral and political debate."

"I am so glad to have met you! You will always have a special place in my heart. I will remember our little talks and the laughs we had when I was at your home. Keep an eye out on me. You will be forever missed. You are with our Good Lord and no more pain, my friend. See you when I get there." — Kathy Wears, Columbus, Ohio
"All of our lives have been enriched through the life and ministry of Fred. His friendship, encouragement and writings have enlarged all of our capacity to serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I'll always remember going to the 'Friends of Fred' Party he threw to introduce his friends to one another. What a blessing that special day was! I will never forget it as I now consider his friends, mine!" — Marcia W. Kendall, Dallas, Texas
"You've left a legacy which you can be proud. Our time together may have been short but your faith and erudition was sterling and will be a benchmark for me until we meet again. Thanks for being that dear friend to Julie and me. Peace at last, Fred." — Robert Klusty, Columbus, Ohio
"Our Brother Fred is living in Glory! No more "Stages of Sanctification" [the title of a book he wrote] for him! May God bless you and your family through this time of grief." — Julie Klusty, Columbus, Ohio
In his RenewAmerica bio, Fred said of himself when he began writing at RA in 2003:
"During my teen years, I discovered a passion for truth in my heart and also discovered I was a political conservative. During my college years I joined the debate team, got active in politics and discovered that I enjoy a philosophical approach to learning. I was deeply convinced that truth exists and can be found by those who mean to have it. I devoted myself to the search for truth and stuck with that devotion for the rest of my life.
"At some point, I realized that to find truth one must go to the fountainhead of truth, namely God."
Trained as a CPA and holding an MBA, Fred worked 17 years as an auditor for the State of Ohio before retiring to take up his passion for writing. During his lifetime, he estimated he wrote over 500 significant essays.
