SIENA HOEFLING — Justice Clarence Thomas recently said that all pro-life regulatory laws are useless in overturning Roe v. Wade. Not in so many words. But you may have heard that Justice Thomas joined progressives on the Supreme Court June 28, 2019, in refusing to hear a case on dismemberment abortions. In rejecting Harris v. West Alabama Women's Center, Justice Thomas laid out the reason behind his vote. Thomas said he denied certiorari because nothing about the case asked the Court to revisit its precedent.... (more)

REV. MARK H. CREECH — This week the Washington Examiner reported that Pastor Andrew Brunson said he was "astounded at the speed with which the U.S. is imploding" and that he predicts persecution of Christians will follow. Brunson is the evangelical Presbyterian missionary to Turkey who spent two years in a Turkish prison. He was falsely accused of being part of a failed coup attempt against that country's President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The charges against Brunson resulting in his unjust imprisonment triggered a war of words and diplomatic struggles between Turkey and the U.S. government.... (more)

ANDREW MCCARTHY — The president can be very entertaining, but I don't pay much attention to political rallies, including his famously raucous ones. For the faithful, the rallies are fun spectacles, like rock concerts or ball games. I don't think they can be taken too seriously, except perhaps as a gauge of the president's support. Not in lieu of polls, but in conjunction. And with healthy skepticism: The polls have a history of undercounting Trump supporters, but the ardor of the Trump base on display at the rallies should not be confounded with national enthusiasm for the Trump presidency -- though it may signal more openness to it, especially in light of the increasingly radical alternative.... HUMAN EVENTS — Last week, President Trump suggested that a few particularly acerbic critics of his immigration policies should pack up and leave. For that, he was branded a racist. What's really going on here? In 1978, the great Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn was invited to give the commencement address at Harvard University. In his speech, the exiled dissident harshly criticized Western news reporting for endorsing "fashionable trends of thought and ideas" while suppressing "independent-minded people from giving their contribution to public life."... CONRAD BLACK — As we settle into high summer and the period of maximum difficulty in finding anything to fill in hours of television news, especially 24/7 news television, two well-established political trends are emerging in this pre-electoral period: The president's opponents continue to dig themselves into foxholes that they will not be able to escape, and the president's tactical victories continue to be compromised by his verbal sloppiness. In completely nonpartisan terms, both phenomena are disappointing. The process of the president's leaving verbal lapses for his enemies to exploit, and of the Democrats and national media doing so excessively, is more complicated than it seems.... (more)
