WES VERNON — In this century, as our nation appears on the verge of a (mostly so far) non-shooting civil war brought about by cultural battles and an attempt to overthrow a sitting president, Americans wonder: How did we get into this mess? It's axiomatic that one of the best ways to find one's way out of a bad predicament is to understand how we got there in the first place. Herewith comes an information-loaded analysis titled Betrayal At Bethesda.... (more)

SIENA HOEFLING — It was a decision that tossed a crumb to religious liberty with one hand, while it took the whole cake away with the other. The "cake-baker case," properly called Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, convinced conservatives they had won a battle in the culture war.... (more)

ANDREW C. MCCARTHY — I must respectfully disagree with the editors regarding the Supreme Court's ruling in Masterpiece Cakeshop. Professor Steve Vladek is right: The decision is "remarkably narrow." One cannot help but be struck by the majority's reticence from the outset: "Whatever the outcome of some future controversy involving facts similar to these, the Commission's actions here violated the Free Exercise Clause." Mind you, this is from the pen of Anthony Kennedy, a judicial supremacist who ordinarily interrupts his liberty bender only to scold the People -- formerly known as the sovereign -- to pipe down and quit grousing once the Robed Nine have spoken.... PHILIP KLEIN — The U.S. is now closer to the insolvency of the Social Security than to the attacks of Sept. 11. Trustees for the retirement and disability program revealed on Tuesday that Social Security will no longer be able to meet its obligations to beneficiaries starting in in 2034, or 16 years from now -- which is less time than has elapsed since terrorists slammed airplanes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001.... ALAN KEYES — In an article last week, I lament the ongoing elitist faction assault on the presidency. To write it, I revisited, as I often do, good arguments from America's founding generation. EDITORS OF NATIONAL REVIEW — The word of the day, according to the media, is "narrow." Describing the Supreme Court's 7–2 holding that the state of Colorado violated baker Jack Phillips's right to free exercise of religion by ruling that he violated the state's public-accommodation law when he refused to bake a custom cake for a gay wedding, the New York Times said that the majority "relied on narrow grounds." CNN legal analyst Steve Vladeck called the decision "remarkably narrow." NPR's Nina Totenberg wrote a story headlined "In Narrow Decision, Supreme Court Decides In Favor Of Baker Over Same-Sex Couple."... (more)
