Russia on homosexuality: redux

A letter is circulating the Web, interestingly titled "From Russia with Love," purportedly from Vladimir Putin. Kevin E. Lake, an Iraq War veteran and author posted the letter on the blog site "The Free Patriot," on September 8, 2013. It is a fascinating read that leaves you with the distinct conclusion that, if it is indeed from Putin, he is male and he leads. Something that America sorely lacks in current leadership.

Among many insightful points that Putin made in the letter, one statement caught my eye, because I recently wrote an article regarding Russia's bold stance against homosexual activism. He compared Obama's despicable behavior of pandering to Russian homosexuals during a diplomatic visit, to a scenario where he, Putin, might arrange a meeting with the National Rifle Association (NRA), while engaged in a diplomatic visit to the United States. Obama, after all, despises the NRA and its push for gun rights, as much as Putin despises the efforts of homosexual activists in Russia to do what they have done in America.

My commentary, however, regards a couple of responses that I received from Russian readers to my earlier article "Russia Rejects the Homosexual Agenda." First, I will admit that I stand corrected in identifying Russia as a "communist nation." Apparently, Russia has not been communist since 1991. One respondent wrote that Russia is about as communist as Obama is Christian. Touché.

The other respondent strongly objected to the premise on which I based the actions of the Russian Duma. I assumed demographics was the reason the legislative body voted overwhelmingly as it did. They sought to protect Russian youth from the devastating influences of homosexuality on civil society. On that point, I was corrected. The respondent chided my ignorance by offering a few statistics, which I have no reason to dispute. Statistics can be verified.

Per this reader, the Russian church is about 86 percent Christians, with 20 to 30 percent actively practicing their faith (as in weekly church attendance). He further states that Russian Orthodox Christianity is much more than what Americans do on Sundays. He contends that it is embedded in Russian culture. Many of us know that Judeo-Christianity used to be embedded in American culture. The long march of socialist propaganda from the American Left, however, has left American churches in a state of disarray.

He recounts how Lenin's Fascists and Stalin's Communists attempted to destroy the Russian church, but failed to remove its strong moral influence on the populace. He goes further to explain that a full generation has been born and come of age without ever knowing the Soviet system. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's famous Gulag diaries are studied in schools and monks conduct optional Christian education classes. In summary, Russia's fight against the normalization of homosexuality is not just a principled stance to ensure the nation's generational survival, but is rooted in its strong Christian heritage.

I was pleased to receive the historical review of Russia from that reader and told him as much. My point, however, was and remains that it is heartening to see a nation – any nation – fight homosexual activism in such a forceful, effective manner. By having the people's representatives speak for the people that they represent, the will of the people prevails. Our representatives no longer fulfill that responsibility when it comes to the activist homosexual agenda. They bow and scrape, and fold for the sake of political correctness. And, of course, campaign contributions that they can garner from well-heeled homosexual activists and their liberal and Libertarian supporters.

Russia may well still be standing when America has long degenerated under the weight of her moral degradation and disconnect from Almighty God.
