LA Mayor supports Occupy's freedom of speech but denies Prop 8 voters their due
By James Lambert
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is a hypocrite. The Democrat major of the country's 3rd largest city recently lent his support of the Occupy Wall Street effort in LA yet several years ago, Villaraigosa choose to ignore the will of the people concerning Proposition #8 (a voter initiative that defended traditional marriage in California). In fact the LA city council went a step further. They urged their city attorney to fight the proposition in court even though a majority of their citizens supported their initiative. Apparently the 'free speech' expressed by the electorate wasn't good enough.
In 2010, I made a formal attempt to meet with the Mayor and his representative to plead for his support of opposition to Proposition 19 (a California state initiative that attempted to legalize 'recreational' marijuana). As a representative of www.MarijuanaHarmsFamilies.com (No on #19), I couldn't understand why the Mayor (and his city council) would officially denounce this initiative.
Even liberal politicians like Senator Diane Feinstein, Senator Barbara Boxer and other city councils and counties throughout the state (like San Diego, El Cajon, Santee, the county of San Diego and many others) denounced this foolish initiative. Yet Villaraigosa found it easy to deny the "free speech" of the voters. He chose to be silent instead.
It is simply amazing that this mayor will continue to support the many radicals that appear at these rallies yet he will find time to deny the majority of voters who said yes to a ballot initiative in his city. Many of these same 'occupiers' continue to defy law enforcement and are now pledging violence in New York later this week. Yet this very liberal Mayor won't support the 'voice of the people' as he's demonstrated with Prop 8, Prop. 13 and, more recently "No on Prop. 19."
