White House in panic!
By James Lambert
In an unprecedented fashion, Republican Bob Turner defeated Democrat David Weprin last night in a district (NY) congressional race. Congressman Anthony Weiner resigned his seat in June, (leaving it open for election), after his involvement in a sex-texting scandal that was exposed earlier this year.
Turner, (a Catholic), defeated Weprin, (an Orthodox Jew), 53% — 47% in a New York City District that is heavily dominated (40%) by a Jewish population. The district is also heavily dominated by registered Democrats. The Congressional seat had been held by members of the Democrat Party since the 1920s. It was last won by a Republican during the time of the Warren Harding Presidency.
It should be noted that Weprin voted in the NY state legislature to affirm gay marriage. He was also strongly backed by New York Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer. During his election run, Bob Turner criticized the President for his handling of our country's relationship with Israel. He also regularly brought up the economy in his debates with his opponent, Weprin.
Many see this as a sharp rebuke by voters in reaction to President Obama's policies during the last two and ½ years. The President's treasury secretary said today that the economy is approaching a "crisis." Liberal NY Times columnist Paul Krugman labels the economy as being in a "lesser" Depression in a recent interview. Statistics tell us that 6-7% of people who have been unemployed for more that two years have either given up or are no longer looking for jobs. (The government labels this category as 'unit 6'). Additionally, there folks are not being included in government figures so national unemployment is realistically closer to 15% (instead of the stated 9.2%).
During the conclusion of lat year's 2010 election cycle, spokesmen for the DNC told the public that Republican victories in recapturing the House of Representatives were only "cyclical" in nature. The win in District 9 last night must be another "cyclical" occurrence. While high level Democrat operatives down-play this election, many conservatives see this as a foreshadowing of what could come in the Presidential election cycle of 2012.
