Thumb up or down for life!

In the classic 2000 movie "Gladiator," the Roman Emperor would give a thumb up or down to signal whether a combatant in the public sports arena would live or die. This was obviously a very brutal and bloody affair which was not meant for the squeamish or faint of heart. It is difficult to believe that cruel contests like this occurred over 2000 years ago in what was considered a very highly developed society, and thank God we have advanced in our morality and reverence for life — or have we?

This week, I read a deeply disturbing article which immediately gave me visions of the thumb up or down sign for life. A couple has established a web site to let the public vote on whether the pregnant mother should give birth or have an abortion http://www.lifenews.com/2010/11/18/state-5676/. The mother is pregnant with a perfectly healthy baby nicknamed "Wiggles," and the couple is not sure whether they want to become parents even though this miraculous process has already begun for them. The couple wrote "The whole point here is to let people have a real way to voice your opinion on the topic of abortion and have it actually make a difference in the real world.

By voting on whether to continue or abort an actual pregnancy, you are doing so much more than simply telling an elected representative your feelings. You are actually changing something in the real world."

The couple continues, "For the first time in history, your vote on the topic of abortion will not go unheard. We meant that." I witnessed many tragedies and horrors during my career as a police officer, but expectant parents soliciting votes on whether or not to terminate their beautiful unborn child is truly something straight from the gates of hell. I wonder if the couple is considering how their unborn child "Wiggles" would vote on this life and death issue.

Are we heading to a point where the womb will be the gladiator arena and the fate of unborn children will merely be determined by a voting contest? Since abortion became a legal option in this country more than 50 million unborn children have received a thumb down vote, and these most vulnerable citizens were never afforded an opportunity to defend themselves as the ancient gladiators were.

My beautiful daughter Chloe who has Down syndrome represents a group of unborn citizens who receive a thumb down vote for life 90%+ of the time — silent eugenics. The main reason this couple is considering abortion centers on "Wiggle's" mother confessing feelings of "selfishness," and it is society's selfish obsession with perfection that has led to the near extinction of children with Down syndrome.

I am frequently asked why my Christian faith is so deeply rooted and what concrete evidence do I have as a retired police officer of God's existence and love. I immediately grab hold of a pencil or pen and point to the tip explaining this is the size you and all of us were when we were first conceived. In 9 short months, a child appears who is so complex, awesome and unique that the greatest scientists in the world with access to the best technology could not replicate this "miracle" process in any amount of time — case closed!

The couple have posted a photo of the baby's ultrasound on their site, and they appear not be affected by this visible evidence of the life being formed. In the penitentiary, a convict on death row is referred to as a "dead man walking." Is the child pictured in the ultrasound a "dead unborn child forming"? I pray the spiritual blindness that has consumed this couple and our world will soon be lifted and that people will one day be able to see the absolute priceless miracle of Human Life.
