Will Bob Bauer join Catherine Engelbrecht in calling for immunity for Lois Lerner?
By Michael Gaynor
Unlike the liberal media establishment led by The New York Times, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has been covering the ordeal of True the Vote and Engelbrecht.
On Saturday, September 28, 2013, on "Huckabee," Catherine Engelbrecht, founder and president of True the Vote and King Street Patriots, smartly called for granting immunity to Lois Lerner, the recently retired IRS official involved in the targeting of organizations including True the Vote and King Street Patriots and a defendant in the civil action by True the Vote pending in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, because discoering the whole truth is much more important than prosecuting Lerner.
Unlike the liberal media establishment led by The New York Times, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has been covering the ordeal of True the Vote and Engelbrecht. See www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrxI878HjKc and www.truethevote.org/news/true-the-vote-s-catherine-engelbrecht-on-the-huckabee-radio.
On September 20, 2013, the day the Internal Revenue Service was required to respond to True the Vote's civil action, the Internal Revenue Service agreed to grant True the Vote the 501(c)(3) organization status for which it had applied in July 2010 (nine months is the usual wait) and hoped, futilely, that True the Vote would just declare victory and drop the two other causes of action in its complaint. See "Obama IRS bows to resolute True the Vote, hoping to avoid discovery!" (www.renewamerica.com/columns/gaynor/130925).
Postponing action on the True the Vote application apparent was not enough. Engelbrecht had the temerity to promote election integrity, including voter photo identification, the Obama Administration was not amused and the liberal media establishment was ignoring the story. See "Why did the Obama administration target Catherine Engelbrecht personally?" (www.renewamerica.com/columns/gaynor/130603) and "Of course NYT isn't reporting on Obama administration harassment of True the Vote founder Catherine Engelbrecht" (www.renewamerica.com/columns/gaynor/130531).
Although Engelbrecht had suddenly found herself the target of investigations by the Internal Revenue Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms and the Occupational Health & Safety Administration after some twenty years of life without harassment by any federal government agency, she called for granting immunity to Lerner in order to determine "how deep into the West Wing" the IRS targeting scandal goes.
Will Bob Bauer agree with Engelbrecht on immunity for Lerner?
As I wrote in "The 'War' the liberal media establishment ignores: Obama Administration v. 'Nice Woman' Catherine Engelbrecht" (www.renewamerica.com/columns/gaynor/130623): "It is very important to ascertain how high up in the IRS the scandal reached, but it is even more important to learn who is responsible for the IRS, FBI, BATF and OSHA all investigating Engelbrecht after she sought tax exempt status for True the Vote and King Street Patriots."
Bob Bauer is former White House counsel to President Obama and counsel to Obama Biden and the Democratic National Committee. He was appointed as President Obama's general counsel on January 3, 2010, about six months below Engelbrecht filed 501(c)(3) application for True the Vote and King Street Patriots with the Internal Revenue. Bauer stayed until June 30, 2011, and then returned to private practice to again represent President Obama's election team and the Democratic National Committee and publicly attack True the Vote. President Obama publicly described Bauer as "a critical member of the White House team" who would "continue to be one of [his] close advisers."
In an October 2012 Obama Biden memorandum to Interested Parties available online at http://secure.assets.bostatic.com/pdfs/BauerMemo/BauerMemo.pdf, Bauer charged that there was a "Republican assault on voting rights....with deep roots in the party's history and politics" led by the Republican National Committee "aided by organizations closely associated with the party and its goals, such as True the Vote."
True the Vote is demonized in the six-page, single-spaced memorandum. According to Bauer, it was "assisting the effort [to disrupt] the voter registration process" by purporting to train and deploy to polling places around the country 'poll watchers' on the watch for 'fraud'...." Section IV of the memorandum, devoted to True the Vote, begins, "Since the 2010-midterm elections, Texas-based True the Vote (TTV) has been an outspoken member of the voter fraud community and is the social group focused on ending 'vote fraud.' It is the first group since the Karl Rove inspired American Center for Voting Rights was discovered to be a Republican front in 2007."
Did Bauer discuss True the Vote with Lerner and encourage her to hold up True the Vote's approval?
Does Bauer want Lerner to receive immunity in return for testifying?
People deserve to know, especially Engelbrecht.
