College Orientation, part 1: Words to the Wise - A Few Words More
By Curtis Dahlgren
"To strip our past of glory is no great loss, but to deny it honor is devastating." – Daniel Patrick Moynihan
"TRUST IN GOD MAKES THE NATION STRONG." That's from a little book, "Swedish Proverbs," by Joanne Asala, 1994 (Penfield Press) – as are most of the following one-liners (they were collected from many other books published years ago, so they should be in the public domain, and in the public eye!).
- A child is a certain worry and an uncertain joy.
- Do not brag of your father's reputation; what you have is your own.
- The mind of the young is like water in a bucket (it's all wet).
- Being young is a fault that improves daily.
- Everyone has his own devil, and some have two.
- A clear conscience is the best pillow.
- Better to suffer for the truth than be praised for a lie.
- If lies were as heavy as stones to carry, people would speak only the truth.
- The rooster often crows without a victory, and he thinks the sun rises to hear him too.
- Empty barrels make the loudest rattle.
- If a fool just kept quiet, he wouldn't be a fool.
- Better to bow than to hit your head on the lintel of the door.
- With wheat as with people, the heaviest heads bow.
- Take hold of God's grace now; younger you will never be.
- Better a good death than an evil life.
- Not all autumns fill granaries.
- The Lord gives every bird its fill, but He does not cast it into the nest.
- If one sheep bleats, the whole barnyard is thirsty.
- The clock must be the master of the house.
- When the cat and mouse agree, the farmer's in trouble.
- The Comforter's head never aches.
- A man without a wife is a man without thought.
[Hmmmmm – I'll have to think about that one!]
