America: One nation under God?

America, are we, or are we not still one nation under God? What does this mean? And finally, why does it matter?

Since 1954, millions of students have recited the current form of the Pledge of Allegiance in schools, a pledge calling America one nation under God. To refresh our memories, that Pledge reads:
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic, for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
As adults, most of us still have these words written in our hearts and minds. The words meant something to us when we were children, and should mean even more to us today. We live in a wonderful country filled with magnificent beauty, and tremendous opportunity for everyone who wants to work for it. (That old American dream thing.) And the main reason for such blessings? God...The God who loves us with an everlasting love (Jer. 31:3), and is the giver of all good things (James 1:17). The God who created all things (John 1:3).

Back in the 1950's, school children were still being taught the truth about our Founding Fathers – the reasons they came to America, and the foundational principles behind our new government. We were still being taught the backgrounds of these truly great men, and the fact that most were Christians. And when I say Christians, I don't mean the mealy-mouthed, lukewarm, apologetic kind we see so much of today. These men were well-educated, articulate, strong, fearless, and totally devoted to our Savior, Jesus Christ. Some were theologians, ministers – watchmen on the wall-type servants (Is.62:6).

But for over the past five decades, brutal war has been waged against God, Christianity, the Ten Commandments, and the Bible in America. Americans have repeatedly been told there is no God, or that God is dead. We have been told God (if there is one) has no place in our schools, government, or basically anyplace public. We have two branches of our Federal government, the Judicial and Legislative, working diligently to make it so. And then, adding insult to injury, we get a president who breaks with all tradition and apologizes for our Christian heritage, avoids mentioning the God of the Bible, and openly promotes the gods of other religions. He speaks at Christian institutions and colleges, but insists that all crosses and religious objects are covered. (OMG...what would people think about a cross being displayed at a Christian institution?!) Furthermore, this god-in-his-own-eyes president has the audacity to travel around the world proclaiming that we are no longer a Christian nation, while at the same time promoting other religions and ungodly behaviors.

Tragically, all of these things have had serious consequences. How about the ongoing sexual revolution? Or what about the millions of babies who have been murdered by their mothers and complicit abortionists? Or what about the events of 9-11 when Islamic terrorists came to, well, terrorize us – to inflict harm upon us? Why? Because we are infidels (unbelievers). Many nations in the world hate us because of the filth we export around the world like movies, books, magazines, pornography, and music. Muslim countries have been the most vocal leaders denouncing our society.

The New American (thenewamerican.com) reports that during Mr. Obama's recent African trip, he was spouting his usual PC lingo about people universally being treated equally, "regardless of race, regardless of religion, regardless of gender, regardless of sexual orientation." In Senegal, President Macky Sall's quick reply to Obama's homosexual sales pitch made it clear that he and his nation don't agree. Sall said, "We are not ready to decriminalize homosexuality." Senegal's citizens reacted to Obama's pitch even more emphatically. Senegal is 95 percent Muslim, and its citizenry is apparently pretty sure about what their religion teaches.

During this same trip, Kenya's Deputy President William Ruto spoke about those, like Obama, who embrace homosexuality. While saying, "that is their business," he further said that "We believe in God," and that "the nation of Kenya is a God-fearing nation."

How does Obama's promotion of homosexuality while in Africa fit into our discussion? It is an example of America's promotion of ungodly ideas and behavior to the rest of the world. In this case, Mr. Obama is trying to ram homosexuality down the proverbial throats of other nations, when most American citizens don't even agree with his stance. He has even threatened to cut-off aid to countries that don't embrace homosexuality. You see, the devil (yes Virginia, there is a devil) isn't satisfied with simply tempting and then conquering one nation. He wants ALL nations. Obama is just his major supporter and mouthpiece in this instance. But unlike most of our government leaders, and a growing number of our religious leaders, those leaders in other countries stand firmly behind their gods and beliefs. We, on the other hand, have relinquished our position of "moral authority" because of our denial of Almighty God, and our refusal to obey His commandments.

While America is going to hell in a hand-basket, the representatives We the People have elected to govern us and faithfully "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States," have been too busy "fundamentally transforming" America. The leaders who just go-along to get-along are just as guilty as those who deliberately do whatever is necessary to stay in office, or the zealots for the liberal/Marxist/socialist/communist/progressive movement.

Sadly far too few of our representatives are brave enough to stand against those instrumental in the destruction of America. Perhaps this is why the Bible teaches us to pray for our leaders (1 Tim. 2:1-3). The devil is always busy waving temptation in front of us in the form of the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life (1 Jn. 2:16), things to which nobody is immune. These three temptations are at the root of all sin, and as we can readily see if we open our eyes, are rampant in our "anything goes" society.

So despite what the Pledge of Allegiance says about America being one nation under God, indivisible, we are no longer one nation or indivisible. The anti-God movement of the past 50+ years and the constant pitting of one group of Americans against another have divided us. And moreover, what these dividers call "progressive" is actually destroying us.

But while we may be divided, are we still "one nation under God?" As Sarah Palin might say, "You betcha." What is required of us going forward? We will discuss this and more in the next column – both the good and bad. The same God who created us has given us the answers to save us. Since America belongs to We the People, not the Federal government, shouldn't we all take some time to pray for His mercy upon our nation and leaders? To anyone willing to hear....
