We have learned that "Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, said Tuesday that he would be willing to hold the hand of someone dying from assisted suicide, and that he does not see that as lending implicit support for the practice."

It is unclear why Paglia would say such a thing given the fact that the act of assisted suicide, a form of euthanasia, is an assault on the dignity of the human being and a direct offense against God and His law. But then again, Paglia has done many things that are counter-Catholic, including appointing known abortion supporters like ethicist Nigel Biggar to membership on the Academy.

Clearly, accommodation to evil is not troublesome to Paglia, but it certainly is to me. As Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen wisely said, "Tolerance does not apply to truth or principles. About these things, we must be intolerant."

Paglia needs to learn this lesson!
