Merry Christmas!
By Matt C. Abbott
–––––––––––
Arose the brightest light
Darkness fell away afar
Foretold this holy night
Immaculate Vessel, clean and pure
Through Whom is born our King
The trail of tears to thus endure
With the gifts the wise men bring
Kingship was shown by the gift of gold
Frankincense for His priesthood
By myrrh, the Cross is thus foretold
These three signified thus understood
Drifting further from the star
Mankind forgot this significance
We have lost sight of the Manger
We believed it made no difference
The wonder of the meaning of life
The miracle of one Infant born
Lifting away the bondage and strife
A Holy Heart full of love adorned
How I wish to hold Him close to me
And gently to sing Him to sleep
Then follow Him to Calvary
And there my tears to weep
Many have been my sins
For them, I bear bitter tears
But the joy of hope begins
As He removes my fears
God gave His only Son
To redeem the human race
Our hope the only One
The joy of Christmas grace
a couple sets out in damp and dark
shelter seekers
for love’s dear spark
In hope an inn is brought to light
a pleading from Joseph
to innkeeper’s wife
who turns away from cold of night
where shepherds’ bells ring out low
Between the walls of David’s town
cave set apart is now bestowed
for future’s cross and kingly crown
In desert night half-spent
a mammal’s trough is lent
olive wood fashioned anew
a bed set apart to hold God-child true
a Maiden set apart
gazes on His illumination
pondering within her heart
this light for all nations
His gift is on this barren tree ––
A tree set apart from all others
His limbs reach out to wide earth’s ends
a sacrifice for all His brothers
